Is PrEP right for me?

PrEP is for people who want protection from HIV. You may benefit from PrEP if you are a man who is sexually active with other men, are a recreational drug user, or if you are from a region with a high rate of HIV infections. If you’re unsure if PrEP and MI-PrEP (Medicare ineligible PrEP) are right for you, take the short survey below to find out.

Are you eligible for MI-PrEP?

Accessing PrEP in Western Australia

If you want to know more about accessing PrEP in Western Australia, including information for people with and without Medicare, read more below.
  • If the survey shows you are eligible, you can book an appointment with either Royal Perth Hospital or South Terrace Clinic. Both clinics offer in-person and phone or video appointments.

Follow the prompts at the end of the survey, or click here to find their phone numbers and websites.

  • If you have Medicare and are interested in PrEP, speak to your GP or local sexual health clinic. PrEP is covered by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, meaning it is available at a reduced cost for people with Medicare.

  • Once you have your appointment and receive your prescription, you can collect PrEP from most pharmacies.

If you are eligible for MI-PrEP, you can collect your PrEP for free from the pharmacy at Royal Perth Hospital or Fiona Stanley Hospital. They can also mail it to you.

If you get PrEP from other pharmacies, there will be a charge.

  • PrEP is available across Australia. However the PrEP West Medicare Ineligible PrEP (MI-PrEP) service is only available to people living in Western Australia. This includes metropolitan and regional areas.

If you are from another state in Australia and are interested in accessing PrEP, speak to your local GP or sexual health clinic.
